Shapes in Hindi
Circles, squares, triangles and more — the Hindi words for basic आकार (aakaar, shapes), perfect for young learners and a handy stepping stone into describing the objects around you.
Shapes are a friendly early topic — they're concrete, you can point at them, and the same words you learn for a circle or a square come back when you describe everyday objects: a round plate, a square box, a long straight road. The general word for "shape" is आकार (aakaar), which neatly also means "size".
Hindi often has two words for a shape: a plain, everyday one and a more formal geometry term you'd meet in a maths class. A circle, for instance, is the casual गोल (gol, "round") in conversation but the precise वृत्त (vritt) in a textbook. We list both so you can recognise either.

Usage notes & common mistakes
गोल does double duty. In everyday Hindi गोल covers anything round — a circle, a ball, a wheel. When you need the strict geometric "circle", switch to वृत्त. Likewise गोला (gola) leans toward a 3-D ball or sphere.
Counting sides. Several shape names are transparent once you spot the number inside them. त्रिभुज is tri (three) + bhuj (sides). The same त्रि you'll recognise from English "tri-". Learning shapes alongside the numbers in Hindi makes these patterns click.
आकार means shape and size. Because आकार covers both, ask about shape specifically with "what shape?" — किस आकार का? (kis aakaar ka?) — or use a concrete shape word to be clear.
A small gotcha for learners: वर्ग means "square" in geometry, but the very same word also means a "class", "group", or "category" in other contexts. As ever in Hindi, context settles it.
